Fort Sumter National Monument is a historic site preserving Fort Sumter – the location of the first engagement of the American Civil War. This neat place was designed as a part of the defensive system and is a great place to learn the nation’s founding story, for both kids and adults. I’m not a huge history buff, but I actually found this pretty fascinating! Just remember that since they are commemorative areas, some recreational activities might be limited.

 

Charleston City Market

Located in the heart of downtown Charleston, the Historic Charleston City Market is one of the South’s most lively places. Though some might say that it’s gotten a bit touristy nowadays, it still gives you a glimpse of what it was like in the old days. If you decide to explore the market, be sure to pay a visit to the “basket ladies”, who have been weaving baskets for centuries.

 

Joe Riley Waterfront Park

Come here for a breathtaking sunset while watching sailboats cruise around at the Joe Riley Waterfront Park. This park has gorgeous landscaped gardens and a massive water fountain. If you feel like getting a bite, stop at one of the beautiful oceanside restaurants and get a taste of a traditional southern meal.

 

South Carolina Aquarium

Overlooking the Charleston Harbor, South Carolina Aquarium is a must-visit for any ocean lover. Learn about more than 5000 creatures and ways of protecting them. Get ready to watch turtles, stingrays, sea stars and sharks swim around and catch their daily dive shows. The aquarium is a great place to explore for every age under the sea!

 

Do a Bridge Walk

 

There might not be a more glorious architectural feature of Charleston as the Arthur Ravenal Jr Bridge, located between downtown and Mount Pleasant. The famous bridge was named after former congressman Arthur Ravanel Jr., who gave a lot of input on raising funds for the project. Nowadays, the bridge is an excellent place for taking a walk and getting the city’s best views.

 

The Battery

This fortified seawall, located at the southernmost tip of the peninsula, is one Charleston’s most popular landmarks. The centerpiece of the Battery, without a doubt, is White Point Garden. The garden was named after the oyster shells that used to cover the ground. Nowadays, it often hosts different picnics, concerts and weddings. So, if you’re looking for a place to tie the knot – maybe this is the right one?

  

Folly Beach

If you’re more of a beach than a city girl, you’re going to fall in love with Folly Beach. The family friendly place is often called a mecca for surfers and anglers, and perfect for anyone who loves to spend time with their toes in the sand.
